1 *πέμφιξ
*πέμφιξ, -ῑγοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: poet. word of unstable meaning, which is based partly on the artificialities of hell. poets (s. Wenkebach Phil. 86, 300ff.): `bubble of air or water' (secondarily of the soul, s. Nehring IF 40, 100ff.), `blister on the skin, drop (of water or blood), drizzle, spraying spark, also said of the sunlight' (Ibyc., trag., hell. poetry).Derivatives: πεμφιγώδης `full of vesications' (Hp.). Besides πεμφίς, only gen. pl. - ίδων (Lyc. 686; v. 1. - ίγων). -- With ο-vowel: πομφός m. `blister on the skin' (Hp.); more often with λ-suffix in πομφρολύζω (- ύσσω?), only aor. 3. pl. πομφόλυξαν `sprang up' ( δάκρυα; Pi.), and πομφόλυξ, -ῠγος f. (also m.) `bubble' (Hp., Pl., Arist., Thphr.), metaph. of a female hair-ornament (Ar., att. inscr.), of an architecton. ornament (Att. inscr.), of shieldknobs (H.), of a zincoxyde (medic.); as 1. member in πομφολυγο-παφλάσματα pl. joking formation (Ar. Ra. 249). From it πομφολυγ-ωτός `provided with bosses' (Ph. Bel.), - ώδης `like bubbles', - ηρόν n. `plaster with zinc oxyde' (medic.), - όω `to make bubbles' (Arist.), - όομοι, - ίζω `to bubble' (medic.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Expressive words, which may be old as regards the kernel but in Greek preserved their special morphological character. The nearest example of πέμφιξ is not recognisable ( μάστιξ and τέττιξ are too far off; Chantraine Form. 397); the hapax πεμφίς after the many words in -ῑ̆δ- (cf. Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 201 n. 2; to far-going Specht Ursprung 212 a. 228). The ablauting πομφός was adapted to the o-stems; here with λ-suffix πομφο-λύξαι, - υξ (s. on μορμώ); cf. also φλύζω, οἰνό-φλυξ, φλύκταινα and Persson Beitr. 1, 58 a. 2, 879; similar βομβυλίδας πομφόλυγας H. -- To a group popular and onomatop. expressions for `blow up etc.', which are found esp. in Baltic, e.g. Lith. pam̃p-ti `swell, aufdinsen', pempùs `fatt-bodied', pumpùlis `roundish, thick-bellied thing', with voiced cons., e.g. bum̃balas `knob, bladder', with aspirate Arm. p'amp'ušt `urine-bladder'. -- Cf. βέμβιξ and βόμβος w. lit., also W.-Hofmann s. pampinus. - The words may well be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,503Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > *πέμφιξ

Also στρέβλη f. `winch, roll, screw', also as instrument of torture (A., Arist., Plb. etc.); formation as σμί-λη a.o., backformation from στρεβλόω or substant. of στρεβλός? -- A. With o-vowel: στρόβος m. `whirl' (A. Ag. 657, H.). From this 1. στρόβ-ῑλος m. `top, whirlwind, whirlpool, fir-cone etc.' (Att., hell. a. late; cf. ὅμ-ῖλος a.o.) with - ίλιον, - ιλίτης, - ιλέα, - ιλᾶς, - ιλεών, - ίλινος, - ιλώδης, - ιλίζω, - ιλόω (all late). 2. - ίλη f. `cone made of lint' (Hp.). 3. - εύς m. name of a fuller's instrument (sch.). 4. - εία f. `fullery?' The orig. meaning still in στραβο-πόδης `with twisted feet' (Hdn.). Further στράβηλος m. f. `wild olive-tree' (Pherecr. in lyr.), name of a snail (S. Fr. 324, Arist. a.o.); στραβαλός ὁ στρογγυλίας καὶ τετράγωνος ἄνθρωπος. Άχαιοί H.; στραβεύς κωπεύς H. (Chantraine Étrennes Benveniste 17). On ἀστραβής s. v. -- C. Also with - ει- in Thess. Στρειβουνείοι (: *Στρείβων) ? s. Bechtel Dial. 1, 210. -- Lat. LW [loanword] strabus, strabō, strambus, also scriblĩta f. des. of a cake from *στρεβλίτης ( ἄρτος); s. W.-Hofmann s.v. and Leumann Sprache 1, 206f. (= Kl. Schr. 173).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin] (V)Etymology: As so many words in - β- the above group as a whole has a popular-expressive character. The primary verb that belongs here has an aspirate, s. στρέφω. -- I don't think that the word has anything to do with στρέφω. The word is rather Pre-Greek (note the prenasalization in στóμβος; the suffix in στραβ-αλ-, στροβ-αν-; the suffix - ιλ- is frequent in Pre-Greek. The variation α\/ο\/οι is unknown to me. None of the words is discussed by Furnée.)Page in Frisk: 2,806-807Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > στρεβλός

5 ἀρετή
ἀρετή, ῆς, ἡ (Hom.+, a term denoting consummate ‘excellence’ or ‘merit’ within a social context, hence freq. w. δικαιοσύνη; cp. the tripartite appraisal Pla., Protag. 329c: δικαιοσύνη, σωφροσύνη, ὁσιότης). Exhibition of ἀρετή invites recognition, resulting in renown or glory. In Homer primarily of military valor or exploits, but also of distinction for other personal qualities and associated performance that enhance the common interest. The term is a favorite subject in Stoic thought relating to morality. Theognis 147f summarizes Gk. thinking: ἐν δὲ δικαιοσύνῃ συλλήβδην πᾶσʼ ἀρετή ʼστι,| πᾶς δέ τʼ ἀνὴρ ἀγαθός, Κύρνε, δίκαιος ἔων=in a word, Cyrnus, all excellence lies in uprightness, and a good person is one who is upright.① uncommon character worthy of praise, excellence of character, exceptional civic virtue (Theognis 147; Aristot., EN a detailed discussion of ἀ.; s. indexes in OGI, SIG, IPriene, et al.; Herm. Hal.; Diod. Sic. 2, 45, 2 of a woman, self-styled ‘Daughter of Ares’, reputed for her valor; s. Wetstein on 2 Pt 1:3), the LXX transl. הוֹד majesty, high rank (Hab 3:3; Zech 6:13; cp. The latter sense ‘praise’ (pl.=laudes) has been maintained for 1 Pt 2:9, which is probably influenced by Is 42:12; 43:21. It is poss. that Semitically oriented auditors of 1 Pt interpreted the expression along such lines, but Gr-Rom. publics would in the main be conditioned to hear a stress on performance, which of course would elicit praise (cp. Plut., Mor. 535d).—AKiefer, Aretalogische Studien, diss.
